Winter Sunset, 2007. Enamel on aluminium, 42cm X 125cm.
Looking up at the intense blue of a
mediterranean sky, the clouds forming
shapes between substance and air, a
pattern of light and shade which
alternately permits and blocks the warmth
on my skin. The sky is the heavenly, spiritual.
The ethereal and poetic instinct.
But staring up at the sun in the sky through
our sunglasses, can we ever forget Apollo,
whose son Phaeton crashed the golden chariot
into the sea, creating a stupendous flaming
sunset in the process.
In the evening the setting sun forms both a
picture postcard of loveliness as well as a
flaming memorial to the end.
