Home Truths
As part of the London Residencies programme of the Arts Council, Randy Klein was awarded funding to work with Thames Reach, a homelessness charity. The artist began by joining outreach workers on the streets of London, worked with clients of Thames Reach in interim housing in hostels, and finally began working with former homeless clients who were housed in their own flats.
Home Truths Film
A group of former homeless people take the viewer back to the streets where they had slept rough, sometimes for years. They talked about their experiences from the perspective of having finally settled in their own flats.
The 5 minute film was funded by KPMG and was awarded first prize as best film and for best music in the LWT film competion and broadcast on LWT. Thames Reach was given the prize, professional video equipment.
The film is still being used by Thames Reach as an important document of the reality of living rough, and the work they do to change peoples' lives.
The Home Truths Sculpture
Working with former homeless people, a number of workshops were held in various venues. Using text, painting, and collage, participants explored the theme of 'What does a Home Mean?" There were poems, drawings, photographs. All of these were translated into card models.
The card models were the transferred to metal using silkscreen and enamels on aluminium. The metal was cut with tin snips and stuck together with rivets. Finally, a block of flats took shape, each with a 'room' made by someone to express their personal idea of "Home".
The finished sculpture was exhibited in the lobby of KPMG, one of the projects sponsors.
The Home Truths Book
Finally, a book was published. This provided the opportunity to use some of the writing and images created by participants. It also was a diary by the artist based on his experiences on the street with Thames Reach outreach workers. Finally, it serves as a document of the entire project.
