Mozart Estate
As part of the redevelopment of the Mozart Estate, Acton Housing Association appointed artist Randy Klein to work with the local community to create public art works. The brief was to work with young people on the estate, and elderly residents, to engage them in a collaborative consultation.Local children contributed drawings which were incorporated into enamelled panels in a new play space. Two new stainless steel arches were created to mark the new open space and provide a feature entrance.
Memory Wall
Elderly local residents contributed personal mementoes which wereto be used to create a “Memory Wall”. These included costume jewellry, old photos, small toys, medals, cigarette cases, etc. The objects were cast into resin blocks, and were built into a feature wall on the estate. A curved stainless steel sculpture was created to mark the entrance to the new open space.
Story Wall
Children living on the estate were invitedto take part in workshops, where they wrote stories and created drawings to illustrate them. These were used as the basis for a series of enamel steel panels, set into a new 'Story Wall' which ran around the new play area.
Lasting Legacy
The artworks havew formed an integral part of the renewed estate. Tenants have a new sense of pride and ownership of their environment.
