Nunhead Station Sculpture
A commission to create a large scale entrance sculpture for Nunhead Station, on the Southeastern Railways south London. Organised by London Borough of Southwark, and originally suggested by a local resident.
Competition
A competition was held and artists invited to submit proposals. After a shortlist was created of three artists' ideas, a public vote was held, and Randy Klein's design was selected.
Design
The winning design was based on the view from the platform of the station. This was the basis for a painting by Klein, which was exhibited at GX Gallery and is in a private collection. The view was simplified into a black and white drawing which served as the 'canopy' of the sculpture. A model of the sculpture was created in the artist's studio, in which this drawing of the view was curved to emphasize its perspective, and held up by two stylised trees.
Process
The black and white drawing was laser cut in 10mm stainless steel., in two sections. One section was rolled to the radius of the model, and welded to the flat section. To create the trees, 140mm steel tube was rolled and welded to match the curves in the model. These tree supports were finished in a high galvanised finish and hand applied silver leaf. LED neon rope was added to the border at the top of the sculpture.
Installation
The site was prepared with a new EDF electric supply and foundations for the sculpture. The sculpture was brought to the site in sections, assembled and raised into position. The LED lighting was timed to come on in the evening and shut after the last train had left the station. Additional groundwork included new planters, soft landscaping of the beds in the station forecourt, and new bollards and paving.
Public Response
The sculpture was launched in April 2010, attended by many local residents and councillors. It has been covered by local press and independent bloggers on the local area. The public response has been very positive, and the new look station is a much appreciated local amenity.
